Edmund King moved himhimself and his family to what is now Montevallo in 1815 because he saw the resources that thethe land had to offer. With the help of his fathers'father's money, heKing was able to move his family and slaves with him from Georgia to unestablished Alabama. Upon moving toarrival in Alabama, King had a log cabin built for himhimself by the Shoal Creek Indians in 1817. The yearIn 1823 was when Edmund King had, King House was built on the plot that washe had acquired and, with the help of the slaves that heKing had brought with him King House was built.
On the land, there were fromBetween 19 toand 25 slaves there that helped lay the bricks down for the foundation. This task was made easier because the property was near Shoal Creek, which provided suitable mud and clay for the slaves used to make themake bricks, andwhich they then carry them back up.carried to the construction site.
