A range of symbols present in this scene includes the idea of “Light and Darkness” where Duncan symbolisessymbolizes lightness and bravery whilst Macbeth symbolisessymbolizes darkness and evil. This symbol is especially apparent in the murder scene when Macbeth is dressed in dark black clothing, whereas Duncan is dressed in white clothing, showing contrast in characters and relating, once again, back to the idea of “Light and Darkness”Darkness.” Another motif that is obvious within this scene and is constantly seen throughout the entirety of the film is the recurring motif of violence. Violence is an extremely common motif seen all throughout Macbeth and is once again shown in this scene in particular when Macbeth relentlessly kills Duncan by plunging a dagger through his chest. Violence could also be considered a theme due to its constant reappearance within the film and reminds the audience of the noticeable influence that the gaining of power has had on Macbeth as an individual. One final recurring motif seen in this part of the film is sleep, sleep is a constant motif often spoken about from characters including Lady Macbeth and symbolisessymbolizes each character’s desire and longing for rest. The motif is shown in this scene when Duncan lays in his bed in a deep sleep, when suddenly, Macbeth murders him. This is symbolisingsymbolizing Macbeth stealing the thrownthrone and power from Duncan, however. However, this lethal scandal was too simple for its consequences. In the scene, Duncan could also act as a manifestation of rest and relaxation, by Macbeth murdering Duncan, he is also killing any possible rest and recollection that would be much needed in the future. This crime results in Macbeth gaining the power, whilst having a limited chance of ever sleeping, which would be vital considering the crime he has just committed will leave him restless for months.
