In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is a civilized man living an uncivilized life, because he considers murder, as hunting. To support this statement, on page 7seven, General Zaroff and Rainsford are having a dispute regarding hunting men. Zaroff proceeds to mention that he considers himself civilized, and an outraged Rainsford remarks, “Civilized? And you shoot down men?”. This quote supports my topic sentence. This is because civilized typically means sophisticated and cultured, whereas murder is considered savage and barbaric. Another supporting incident in the story is while Zaroff is explaining Rainsford’s fate on the island, he states “It’s a game you see,” as he refers to how he will hunt Rainsford. This shows us that Zaroff is an inconsiderate narcissist. This is because, part of being civilized is having a sense of morality, which Zaroff clearly doesn’t have, as we can clearly see in his sadistic values of hunting humans for satisfaction. Also, simply just considering this murder aas a “game” is wrong itself.
This is why General Zaroff
, who seems to be a civilized man, is leading a very uncivilized life on Ship-Trap Island.
