Transportation of Dangerous Goods
The Australian states and territories have responsibility for the road and rail transport of dangerous goods in Australia. For technical information on the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail in Australia, please call the national hotline 1800160401 or contact the competent authority in your state or territory.
The implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, the GHSCLS, is the responsibility of Safe Work Australia. Please direct all enquiries relating to the GHSCLS to workhealth@gov.au.
The National Transport Commission is responsible for maintaining and updating two legal areas: the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail and the associated National and Transnational Model Law.
The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development works with the states and territories, and the National Transport Commission, to promote best practice and internationally harmonised legislation for the land transport of dangerous goods in Australia. The Department has two main purposes: to provide policy advice on national and international dangerous goods matters, and to provide secretariat support to the Competent Authorities Panel.
