The address brings me to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. I walk in through a set of doors and see a man sitting in a chair reading a newspaper.
“Help you?” the man asks.
“Yeah, this dude gave me this card and...” I say before getting cut off.
“Elevator,” he says.
I walk over and get in the elevator. As I am heading up, I inspect the business card while realizing I don’t even know what I'm getting myself into.
“You’re late, sit down.” a voice from behind me says.
Great, I am on one of those elevators that open on both sides. I turn around, walk into the room where the voice came from and sit down in an oddly shaped chair. Six other men are sitting in oddly shaped chairs. The voice came from a man in a suit who was standing.
“My name is Zed. You’re all here because you’re the best of the best of the best,” he said, and then he began listing the different occupations of the people in the room.
The others all come from different branches of the military. I seem underprepared and look quite underdressed compared to these guys. Zed lets us know that we will be taking a series of simple tests.
“I’m sorry, maybe you already answered this, but why exactly are we here?” I ask.
The hand of the man sitting next to me shoots up instantly and Zed calls on him to tell me the answer. The man introduced himself and stated his military title.
“We’re here because you’re looking for the best of the best of the best, sir,” he says.
I can’t help but start to laugh. To my surprise, Zed asks me what is funny.
