I chose this topic for my dissertation because I understand the pressure to look a certain way, influenced by social media and partly by my upbringing. For 15 years, I grew up doing classical Ballet, there’sballet. There is a typical Balletballet dancer’s body;: long legs, long neck, medium torso, small head and slender figure. My natural body type is not the stereotypical Balletballet dancers’ body, I have hips, bum and bust. For years, my ballet teacher made comments on my body shape, and I realise now the effect of thesethose comments as I reached my adolescent years, subconsciously. Subconsciously, I was always comparing myself to others, watching what I ate, and how much water I drunk;drank, as I remember my teacher saying to me to not drink water as I have water weight. I would have never have classed myself as having an eating disorder, but I wouldn’t rule out tendencies. As I’ve stepped away from Balletballet and matured, I have realised the importance of a non-restrictive diet and being thankful for your own health, unfortunately. Unfortunately, not everybody is quite as fortunate.
