Helping people has always been really important to me, I enjoy serving people and getting to know them. But recently, I have used this idea to fuel my passion for social justice issues. Through learning about systemic racism in the U.S., I have become more aware of racism that is still prevalent in the healthcare system. In the United States, black women are 3-43 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes. That is simply not right. I want to pursue nursing with labor and delivery as my specialty so I can be an advocate for racial minorities because everyone deserves equality in healthcare. People in the healthcare field should be held accountable to protect their patientspatients' safety and wellbeing, regardless of their skin color.
Luther College’s nursing program provides a lot of opportunities and experiences that other schools I looked at didn’t offer. From clinicals at Mayo Clinic, Federal Medical Center, and other community-
based health facilities, to traveling abroad to places such as Nottingham, England. After visiting Luther’s campus and talking with members of the nursing faculty, I knew Luther’s program would provide me with a diverse and enriching education that would grow my passion for nursing as well as social justice topics even further. I’m excited to be given the opportunity to explore the nursing field and all of the hard work and reward that goes with it.
