Throughout the novel, the readers discover various conflicts that help the characters find their way to their destinations Firstly, the biggest conflict Elias faces is one with society. The quote reveals that Elias doesn’t want to be like other martialmartials who kill people for no reason and rape women in the streets. Instead, he wants to escape the crisis and live a peaceful life, which is essentially his goal. The author uses a lot of periods to express Elias’s feelings which establishes a precise and heavy emphasis. Secondly, Laia’s decisions cost her to endure many struggles that imply a person vs self-conflict. The quote listed above reveals that Laia regrets most of her decisions, prompting her to be mad at herself for choosing to run away like a coward when her brother needed her the most. This quote is significant throughout the book as Laia hasfeels the guilt of the mistake she made and she tries to change herself and be more strongstronger, like her mother. The tone of the quote expresses that Laia is very irritated with herself for not being there Darin. Lastly, there is a person vs person conflict between Elias and Helene on the third trial. This is a turning point for Elias as he has to kill his best friend to win the trial and if he does not win the trial, he cannot escape the empire. In conclusion, there were some types of conflicts in the book which made the characters stronger and shifted their way more towards their destiny.
