The line in Junot Diaz’s short story “How to date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie,” that really made me think and had the greatest impact on me is when he said, “Run a hand through your hair like the whiteboys do even though the only thing that runs easily through your hair is Africa.” (403). I thought that was a very interesting statement because you can see Yunior’s insecurities about being a Hispanic man in a society primarily dominated by white people. He tends to just please them and make them happy so they couldwill feel comfortable. ItThis is shown when he draws a new map for the mom and when he is with the white girl complimenting her. butBut another interesting thing was when the girl said, “I like Spanish guys” (404). butUnfortunately, he didn’t live up to her expectationexpectations of a Hispanic man, so he just played along to get what he wanted from her. “You love them more than your own” (404), acknowledges his insecurities byof wishing he had white people's lips and not his own. The government cheese symbolizes poverty. The fact that he mentioned ‘government’ when he was talking about the cheese tells us that his family is a low-income family. He wanted to hide it so that his dates don’twouldn’t know his social status or that he is embarrassed by the fact that they are poor. The pictures of himself and his family that he hides symbolizessymbolize that he is embarrassed or isn’t proud of them and his background. He hides it so people won’t question him about it since he has insecurities about his culture orand background.
