The theme the playwright emphasizes in Endgame is darkness and light. Hamm is blind, so his world is filled with darkness, but as Clov appears he is the light for Hamm in his distress. The protagonist in this play is Hamm because the whole play is centered around his life and disability. He also bullies everybody around him to have his way prolonging the play. At the beginning of the play, Hamm, is a character that becomes a bully and throws multiple tantrums throughout the play. Near the end of the play, Hamm doesn’t have that same desire anymore, and Clov is ready to move on and explore what’s left of this dystopian world. The windows in the play are old windows that can be pulled up or pulled in because they are meant to let light in and out. There is a ladder located in the house, and it’s an old one with tiny holes that looks likeas if it could break any second. The front door is a 17th-century wooden door that has arches built into it with chestnut composition, which gives it a darker color. The ashcans look like alley trash cans that have dents and nicks on them. Both of Hamm's parents reside in trash cans. The walls in the play are very old wooden panels. Throughout the play, the setting of the light is very dim. The light isn’t very bright due to most of the light coming through the old windows. The sound effects in the play consist of creeks in the wooden panels from footsteps, and in the end, an alarm goes off to show the final queue of what occurs.
