In my perceived order of importance, starting with one being the most important, the three main responsibilities of a Sales Manager are:
1. Create/maintain a safe and comfortable work environment
2. Teach from experience
3. Get out from behind the desk
Creating and maintaining a safe and comfortable work environment is a crucial responsibility of a sales manager. In order for the team to be successful, they need to feel as if they are able to come to their manager when they have questions or need help. The manager should establish with their team that there is an open door policy, meaning that as long as the door is open, they are welcome to come in and talk about anything on their mind. If the door is closed, maybe for a meeting, phone call, etceteraetc., they should send an email or check back shortly; and if the issue is time pressing, a knock on the door is acceptable. I believe when a sales manager establishes this policy it helps timid employees to know that they are welcome to ask questions or come in when they need help.
