Anaerobic treatment is accomplished by anaerobic bacteria that consume the oxy- genoxygen in the organic matter itself as the organic matter decomposes. In this process, odorous gases are produced. The most common method using this treatment is the anaerobic lagoon.
The anaerobic lagoon is a relatively deep (12 ft to 14 ft) basin that contains liquid waste and provides a climate for decomposition by anaerobic bacteria. Thus, no attempt is made to introduce oxygen into the liquid. The anaerobic lagoon is able to decompose more organic matter per unit of volume than the aerobic lagoon. However, the odor it produces may determine where it can be located.
