This study used formative evaluation during the planning phase through surveys conducted by Southeast Asians to come up with a beneficial intervention for the treatment of depression among S.E.A refugee children. During the implementation phase, formative evaluation was also conducted by the school, community, and academic partners through meetings and constant communication to identify and resolve problems before continuing the next session. In addition, a summative evaluation was also used. The nurse researchers that were involved in the design of the study were the ones who conducted the evaluation and the test was evaluating the outcome of the intervention.
Data collection was generated in this research inas a result of the depression levels of Southeast Asian refugees based upon their socio-demographics. Each child that participated in the research had to be given permission by a parent or a guardian. Before they tested the children, the bilingual teachers translated the questions into Vietnamese and Cantonese to make sure that the questions made sense and were culturally appropriate. When the children were asked to describe their level of depression, they were each in a private setting and asked out loud. Ninety -nine percent of the children asked that the questions be read aloud to them in eEnglish, and they would respond in eEnglish. They were asked 27 questions and chose from three symptom severity levels to describe how they felt over the last two weeks. A score of 9 or above meant that the child was depressed.
The researchers used the data from the CDI scores, and put them into a T-test, to compute the mean scores from each time the test was given to the children. The mean scores were then compared from week
1one (before intervention), to weeks four, and eight, (during intervention) and then one month later after the intervention. For week one the mean score was 10.86, for week 4four the score was 8.63. Week 8eight scored a 7.2 and then the month after scored a 6.15. Those mean scores were then calculated by a 2-tailed significance test to see if there was any significant change in depression levels. A significant level of change would be a .05 or lower. The results of the 2-tailed significance test showed that there was minimal change between week 1one and week 4four, with a 2-tailed sig.nificance of .073. However, when week one was compared to week 8eight and then one month after the test, both results showed significant statistical changes as week 8eight got a .003 and the one month got a .000 2-tailed significance level.
