Over the course of the last two decades, Texas universities have steadily increased the costs asked of college students, while state funding of schools has either stagnated or declined. As a result, students have ended up bearing more of a burden than the taxpayers. These students have been left to deal with expensive loans that have become a trend among most other students across the nation. This has, in turn, initiated a substantial amount of debate over the cost as well as the value of higher education.
To sum up, I believe Texas taxpayers, through increased sales taxes or the implementation of a state income tax, should be the ones to pay more money for higher education in Texas as costs of colleges and universities continue to increase. I feel that this would be the best option because as a tax, it would be distributed as more of a population-based payment, rather than as an extra fee for students and colleges or universities who are already burdened with tuition and college expenses.
