In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, the town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1662 is under the perceived threat of witchcraft. Every character is either lying to save their lives or dying for not admitting to a lie. One character that justifies his belief is John Proctor, a simple townsmentownsman. However, in standing up for his beliefs, John Proctor and many others in Salem were found incriminated ofthemselves persecuted for witchcraft by the court. This was athe result of Proctor’s bad decisions. Proctor, a truly humble man, hadperpetrated made a grave sin when he hadby having an affair with his house maidenmaid, Abigail. Proctor’s affair is highly detailed in A Reassessment of the Goodness of John Proctor: Fair or Foul?, a literary criticism paper written by Susan C. W. Abbotson. Miller presents Proctor’s downfall as a direct result of his affair with Abigail, therefore showing that John Proctor is a tragic hero. Miller used Proctor’s weak judgement to depict Proctor’s traits ofas a tragic hero.
